Diagnostics & investigations

Find the cause before replacing the parts

Structured fault investigation for conventional petrol and diesel vehicles using five main diagnostic platforms, manufacturer-specific tools and hands-on testing.

VULCAN / WORKSHOP
How we help

Vehicle care, made clear

A fault code is a clue, not a parts list. We combine the symptoms and vehicle history with scan data, live values, wiring information and targeted mechanical or electrical tests to build evidence around the real cause.

What this service can include

  • Warning lights, intermittent faults and poor running
  • Live data, actuator tests, wiring and circuit checks
  • Clear findings, limitations and next-step recommendations

We do not undertake EV electrical, high-voltage or EV diagnostic work. Conventional hybrid mechanical or engine work may be considered by prior agreement; electric-drive and high-voltage work are excluded.

Every vehicle and situation is different. Speak to our reception team for availability and an assessment specific to yours.

Good to know before you book

Clear scope. Helpful answers.

Start with an investigation—not a guess

  • We normally begin with one hour of paid diagnostic investigation. That is an initial allowance, not a promise that every fault will be identified within an hour.
  • The test plan can include a scan, electrical measurements, smoke or pressure testing, a road test, component removal or bench testing as appropriate. Further time and dismantling are agreed with you.
  • Our five main diagnostic machines are Bosch KTS, three Autel platforms and Snap-on, supported by VAG-COM/VCDS and other vehicle-specific tools.

Tests that help narrow the cause

  • Oscilloscope checks, compression and leak-down testing, borescope inspection, fuel-pressure testing and parasitic-drain investigation are available where relevant.
  • For intermittent faults, customer videos, recordings and the exact temperature, speed, weather and journey conditions can be especially useful.
  • Supported coding, adaptation and relearn work is checked against the exact vehicle. We do not offer JLR coding/programming on post-2018 vehicles.

Important diagnostic limits

  • No EV electrical or diagnostic work, high-voltage or hybrid-electric drivetrain diagnosis or repairs.
  • No ADAS calibration, key cutting, key programming, lost-key or immobiliser programming service.
  • For hybrid vehicles, conventional mechanical or engine work must be agreed in advance; work on the electric or high-voltage side is excluded.

01

Five main diagnostic platforms

A broad equipment range helps us choose the right access and test functions for the vehicle.

  • Bosch KTS diagnostic platform
  • Three separate Autel diagnostic platforms
  • Snap-on diagnostic equipment
  • VAG-COM / VCDS capability for supported Volkswagen Group vehicles
  • Additional manufacturer-specific diagnostic machines and service tools where available
02

What we investigate

The symptom and operating conditions guide the test plan.

  • Engine-management, ABS, airbag and other warning lamps
  • Poor starting, cutting out, misfires, loss of power and limp mode
  • Battery drain, starting, charging, lighting and conventional 12-volt electrical faults
  • Intermittent faults, communication faults and sensor plausibility concerns
  • DPF, OPF, AdBlue, boost, fuelling and emissions-related symptoms
  • Noises, vibration, overheating, leaks and mechanical performance concerns
03

Beyond a code scan

Reading a stored code is only the beginning of a proper investigation.

  • Vehicle history and symptom interview
  • Full-system or targeted control-unit scan
  • Live-data comparison and freeze-frame review
  • Actuator tests, adaptations and service functions where supported
  • Wiring diagrams, circuit checks, voltage-drop and continuity tests
  • Mechanical testing, smoke testing, pressure, temperature or vacuum checks where relevant
04

What you receive

The aim is a usable decision—not a page of unexplained codes.

  • Evidence and findings explained in plain language
  • Confirmed repair recommendation where the cause is established
  • Prioritised next tests where further dismantling or time is needed
  • Estimate or repair options discussed before additional work
  • Clear limits where a dealer or different specialist is required
05

EV and hybrid limits

Our diagnostic capability is for conventional systems and conventional hybrid work agreed in advance, excluding the electric and high-voltage side.

  • No EV electrical or electronic diagnosis
  • No traction-battery, inverter, charging-system or high-voltage investigation
  • No hybrid high-voltage diagnosis or repair
  • Conventional hybrid mechanical or engine work considered only after prior agreement
  • Appropriately equipped EV specialist recommended for electrified-drivetrain concerns

Useful signs and situations

Small changes can be early warnings. An assessment now can prevent avoidable wear, uncertainty or disruption later.

You may benefit from this service if…

  • A warning lamp or message has appeared
  • The vehicle has an intermittent, electrical, running or drivability fault
  • A previous code scan or parts replacement has not resolved the concern

What our support can include

  • Bosch KTS, Autel, Snap-on, VAG-COM and manufacturer-specific tool access
  • Live-data, actuator, circuit and targeted mechanical testing where relevant
  • Evidence, repair options and further-test requirements explained
From first conversation to collection

How the process works

01

Listen and inspect

We start with the symptoms, history and intended use, then inspect or test the relevant systems.

02

Explain the evidence

A code describes what a control unit noticed; it does not automatically identify the failed part. We build the conclusion from symptoms, history, data and physical tests, and we are clear when further time is required.

03

Agree the work

You receive a clear recommendation and have the opportunity to discuss cost, timing and alternatives before additional work begins.

04

Complete and hand over

The agreed work is completed, appropriate checks are made and the outcome or useful aftercare is explained.

Helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

For advice specific to your make, model or symptoms, call the workshop and we will point you towards the right booking.

Why do you charge for diagnostic time?

Diagnosis is skilled investigation: reproducing the concern, interrogating the right systems, interpreting live information and testing the suspected circuit or component. The charge covers that evidence-led work, not simply plugging in a scanner.

Which diagnostic machines do you use?

The workshop has Bosch KTS, three Autel platforms and Snap-on equipment, alongside VAG-COM/VCDS and other manufacturer-specific diagnostic machines and service tools. The exact platform is chosen around the vehicle and task.

Can you diagnose an intermittent fault?

Often, but intermittent faults can need a longer road test, data recording or a return visit if the symptom is not present. Photos, videos and a detailed description of the conditions make the investigation more productive.

Do you diagnose EV or hybrid high-voltage faults?

No. We do not undertake EV electrical, high-voltage, charging-system, traction-battery or electrified-drivetrain diagnosis. Conventional hybrid mechanical or engine work may be considered after the exact vehicle and task are agreed in advance; electric-drive and high-voltage work are excluded.

What happens to additional work and old parts?

We seek approval by phone or WhatsApp before additional work. If you want old parts returned, ask when approving the work, before anything is discarded. Images can be shared by WhatsApp where possible.

When might a deposit be required?

A deposit may be needed for dealer or online-ordered parts and some larger jobs. Reception will confirm the amount and applicable terms before you commit.

How do I know whether I need diagnostics & investigations?

The signs above are useful indicators, but they can overlap with other faults. Tell us what you have noticed and we will advise whether to book this service, an inspection or diagnostic time.

Can you give an exact price before seeing the vehicle?

We can often explain standard charges or likely ranges. Where condition, specification or diagnosis affects the scope, an accurate estimate follows assessment and is agreed before further work.

Will you contact me if you find something else?

Yes. Additional findings are explained and authorisation requested before we materially extend the work you originally approved.

What should I provide when booking?

Your registration, mileage, relevant warning messages, recent work and a clear description of when the symptom occurs all help us plan the right workshop time.
